Durable Medical Equipment Recycling Program            


Durable medical equipment (DME) is any type of equipment that assists individuals who are disabled, ill or injured, more easily manage their personal needs and daily activities.  

It is a benefit included in some insurances and in Medicaid/Medicare plans. 

DC SHARES provides durable medical equipment to eligible citizens in need - free of charge.

What's Available 

DC Shares provides durable medical equipment (DME) such as:

  • manual wheelchairs
  • crutches
  • bedside commodes
  • grab bars
  • dressing aides
  • toilet safety frames
  • reachers
  • shower chairs
  • transfer benches

Disposable medical supplies such as gloves and incontinence related products are sometimes available.  Please call for more information.  



How Does It Work

To receive durable medical equipment through DC Shares a person must be a resident of the District of Columbia and have an income level of less than $25,000 per year.  

Availability of both durable medical equipment and disposable supplies varies daily and is based on what is donated.  Equipment is distributed on a first come first serve basis.  We do not deliver or pick-up equipment. 

If you cannot come to the DC Shares office a representative may pick up the equipment for you.  The representative can be a family member, social worker, physical therapist or rehab counselor.

When you or your representative visit the DC Shares office, please bring proof of residency AND proof of income. 

Proof of Residency:

  • government-issued I.D. with a DC address
  • a copy of a lease
  • utility bill in your name  
  • DC Medicaid Card (also serves as proof of income)

Proof of Income:

  • Social Security Award Letter
  • Check Stub
  • Last year’s tax return
  • DC Housing Voucher
