DC Assistive Technology Program

Outreach Services

The Assistive Technology Program (ATPDC) provides outreach support to community-based organizations, advocates, and consumers through training sessions, citywide events and information to expand awareness about assistive technology devices and services. The ATPDC reaches out to all agencies and groups to assist in expanding their knowledge base and in acquiring the appropriate assistive technology devices and services.

Our outreach activities include the following: 

Community Events – This program participates in conferences, exhibits, health fairs, and other public forums to provide demonstrations and information on assistive technology devices and services.

Technical Assistance – Technical assistance is provided to organizations, service providers, employers, housing and assisted living providers, tailored for them to understand how the appropriate assistive technology can improve people’s lives.

Training - In an effort to increase awareness about assistive technology services and devices the  ATPDC conducts training sessions. The sessions are tailored to meet your needs. Presentations range in length from thirty (30) minutes to three (3) hours and are generally held at the DCATRC.  The sessions focus on but are not limited to the following:

Definitions of assistive technology devices and services.

Technology and the Law – An overview of the laws affecting people with disabilities.

Assistive technology selection process – The key considerations for matching people and technology.

Assistive technology in Special Education and Vocational Rehabilitation Programs.

Advocacy – An informed consumer is able to advocate on his/her behalf if they understand their rights and responsibilities as mandated by the laws.

Funding – People are often unaware of the various funding streams available for the purchase of assistive technology devices and services.
