ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY EQUIPMENT LENDING PROGRAM

TALKING DICTIONARY

Assistive technology devices can open new worlds for people with disabilities. The Assistive Technology Equipment Lending Program (ATELP) was established to make it possible for individuals with disabilities to try out assistive technology devices before purchasing, to substitute for a device in for repair or on order or for other short-term needs. At this time, a deposit is not required in order to borrow a device.

Who Can Borrow Devices?

Consumers, family members, agency or school representatives, service providers working with individuals with disabilities, AT trainers, evaluators or instructors.

How Does It Work?

The ATELP is operated through the DC Assistive Technologypicture of a communication device Resource Center (DCATRC). It is recommended that you first visit the Center to review the available devices. Staff will assist you in the selection of devices and also provide basic training. Manuals are available for most items.

Equipment can be borrowed for two to four weeks and borrowers and the person responsible for liability must complete and sign an agreement form.

Borrowers are responsible for pick-up and return of all equipment.

Available equipment includes but is not limited to augmentative communication devices, switches, adapted telephones, and hardware for computer access.

SPECIAL NOTE: In order to produce printed information in alternative format, service providers may also make use of a cassette tape duplicating machine, tape recorder, a braille embosser and braille translating software.  Interested persons may come to the DCATRC and utilize this equipment but it cannot be borrowed. You must make your own recordings and provide your own cassette tapes. Because there is no charge for these services, tape duplication is limited to 10 tapes and Braille embossing is limited to 20 sheets.  Staff will also assist you in this process.
